Rosemount 396 and 396VP sensors feature a stainless steel body for use with optional 1 in (25 mm) threaded process connectors suitable for insertion, submersion, or flowthrough installation. Sensors are available with either a standard pH hemi glass bulb or optional pH flat glass bulb. Rosemount 396 sensors feature a standard 15 ft (4.57 m) cable, and Rosemount 396VP sensors feature a Variopol cable connection for use with VP8 quick disconnect interconnecting cables (sold separately).
Rosemount 396 (Basic Flow Chamber)
A simple spool piece with a threaded port for the sensor.
Key Limitation: To remove or install the sensor, you must completely shut down the process, drain the pipe, and depressurize it.
Use Case: A cost-effective solution for non-hazardous applications where process shutdown is simple and acceptable.
Rosemount 396VP (Flow Chamber with Valve)
V = Ball Valve
P = Flow Chamber
This is a flow chamber with an integral ball valve between the process and the sensor port.
Key Advantage: The ball valve allows you to isolate the sensor from the live process. You can safely install, remove, or maintain the sensor while the process is running.
Use Case: The industry standard. Essential for continuous processes and for safety with hazardous, hot, or pressurized media.
Visual Difference: The 396VP has a prominent ball valve handle; the basic 396 does not.
Part 2: The Sensor (TUpH pH / ORP)
The TUpH is the "smart" sensor that threads into the housing's port.
TUpH: Stands for "Transmitter compatible, Universal pH."
pH Sensors: Measure acidity/alkalinity (0-14 pH scale).
ORP Sensors: Measure Oxidation-Reduction Potential (in mV), used for controlling disinfection (e.g., chlorine, ozone).
Key Features of TUpH Sensors:
Smart Preload: The sensor stores its own calibration data. When replaced, a compatible transmitter can automatically read this data, minimizing downtime.
Dual Preload: Can store calibration for two different buffer solutions.
Robust Design: Available in materials like PPS and PVDF for chemical compatibility.
